- Hardened washers — through-hardened (typically HRC 38–45) for structural bolting; the hardness must be compatible with the bolt and nut grade to avoid crushing or galling
- Stainless washers — A2/A4 per ISO 3506-4, hardness matched to stainless bolts; work-hardened where higher strength is required
- Soft washers — plain carbon steel flat washers for general service where hardness is not critical
